What this is for
Modern high-pressure diesel injection is intolerant of both water and fine particulate, so the fuel filter is a protective part rather than a maintenance item. Hydraulic filtration is the same argument on more expensive components: the pump is the thing you are protecting.
Check this before you order
Match the micron rating and the housing your equipment uses. On diesel, confirm whether you need a separate water separator stage.
